Code of Conduct

Per Alberta's Municipal Government Act, RSA 2000, Chapter M-26: 
"146.1(1) A council must, by bylaw, establish a code of conduct governing the conduct of councillors."

On April 9, 2018, Council passed Bylaw #1641, the Council Code of Conduct Bylaw after many discussions.

Some of the most important points emphasized by Council in the process of development of the Bylaw:

• We build and inspire public trust and confidence in our local government. The actions of a Claresholm Councillor benefit the town and the people of Claresholm. Our actions are appropriate, respectful, accountable, non-judgmental and carried out with no personal agenda. 
• We promote public confidence by respecting both the value of transparency and the process established by council for communicating with the public on behalf of council and the municipality. 
• We support effective decision-making through the processes set out in legislation and local bylaws and have respect for the role of the chair. 
• We promote service to the public interest and show leadership by adhering to and upholding legislation, local bylaws, and policies adopted by council. 
• We strive to treat council members, municipal employees, and others with dignity, understanding and respect. 
• We do not use information in a way that is detrimental to the public interest. We follow the confidentiality requirements of the MGA, FOIP, and the Town of Claresholm procedural bylaws. 
• We promote public trust by not exploiting the position of Councillor for private reasons or in ways that would bring discredit to the office. 
• We adhere to the MGA regulations regarding pecuniary interests. We promote the priority of municipal interests and we do not influence decisions for personal reasons. 
• We promote stewardship and public trust and do not use municipal assets or resources for personal reasons. 
• We promote effective leadership and personal development by participating in required training and by accessing development opportunities.
